Agile coaching has been evolving. Here’s my view of some of the stages (Epochs) we’ve gone through and what might be next, noting that we are transitioning from Epoch 3 to 4.
Epoch 1 – Late 1990s/2000 to ~2010
What is an Agile Coach?
XP was king in the early epoch; Scrum then emerged.
The need for agile coaching was ill-defined with moderate interest.
I don’t know if Agile Coach was a role or a “thing” during this time.
Lyssa Adkins' book, published in 2010, added definition and structure to the role at the very end of the Epoch.
People evolved into agile coaching from other roles & domain experience. Using today’s notions of T and Pi-shaped, these naturally were the case.
Certifications emerged late; I earned my Scrum Alliance CEC in 2012.
The value proposition was…Ambiguous. It was Early, what did an Agile Coach do?
