I haven’t spoken about it before on my blog, but my wife has Atypical Parkinson’s Disease and PD dementia. She was diagnosed two years ago, and it is accelerating at a rate far faster than what people see in “standard” PD.
I brought it up to discuss one of her symptoms—something that many PD patients have. It involves becoming smaller in your actions or motions, such as writing smaller or limited arm motions. It also surfaces as speaking very softly, at a lower volume, so people cannot hear you.
We’re currently working through some physical and occupational therapy, and one of the focuses is intentionally being bigger. That is, practicing—
Bigger arm and body movements,
Bigger writing,
And speaking in a bigger voice, trying to shout, which emerges as a “normal” voice to others.
Being Bigger
What does this have to do with Agile Coaching or my typical topics?
First, it reminded me of the importance of practice in our Agile Coaching. If we want to get better (and bigger), we must practice—frequently, intentionally, and purposefully!
Second, it aligns with the coaching responsibility to be seen. To have a voice, exercise your privilege, be present, step out front, and be a change maker and risk taker. Too often, I see Agile Coaches blended into the organization's background while making minor impacts.
Finally, it’s to exercise your voice. Yes, you should have one. Learn how to be loud and proud, courageous, bold, and even bodacious—perhaps even occasionally, just occasionally, braggadocious.
Wrapping Up
My wife is working on becoming bigger, and it’s a struggle for her. Parkinson’s is a terrible disease that often diminishes its victims. As her caregiver, it’s my privilege to help and encourage her efforts to grow big again.
I encourage you to work on your BIGNESS in your Agile Coaching presence. An essential part is finding a mentor coach to assist you in your growth. That is, don’t try to go it alone.
Stay agile, and BIG, my friends,
Bob.
BTW, this post was partially inspired by a recent teach-back session in our current Badass Agile Coaching Masterclass. I was inspired by how the students became BIG in their coaching competency teach-backs. It was wonderful to witness their growth (figuratively and literally 😉
PS: I‘m in awe of your courage, Bug!
I won't lie, this can be very challenging in a super large organization. I needed this reminder today, thanks Bob. All the best as you support your wife, it's just a fact, we all need support in varying degrees, don't we?
Be bigger! Keeping this in mind as I step into more boldness, working on my goals.
Sending prayers your way and your wife's, Bob.
