Letting go
I’ve always struggled to let go of my writing.
After I publish it, I somehow remain connected to it. That’s my—
Writing
Ideas
Thoughts
Feelings
Essence
So, how can I detach from it? I typically can’t.
And, when I get constructive feedback, disagreement, or debate around the ideas, I seem too attached and often get hurt or defensive.
I saw a post from Julian Stodd today that explored the same feelings. And he shared a beautiful metaphor or perspective that resonated deeply with me, and I thought I’d share with you—
As I share early copies of ‘Unreconciled Self: A Planetary Philosophy’, I see the ideas take flight. I lose control. It starts to become ‘what I thought’, rather than ‘what I think’. This is the nature of publishing.
Letting ideas out into the world, sharing them, and seeing them change, and people read and hear them through their own lenses and perspectives.
It becomes something more: an artefact, and a web of ideas. Something I can be part of but do not own.
In this, we each weave our ‘selves’ into the broader landscape, we become embodied within it.
What a fantastic way of looking at your writing, as simply a web of ideas.
I’ve been letting my writing go for decades, but I haven’t entirely released it.
Now I think I can—let them fly freely.
Stay agile, my friends,
Bob.
